House of Earth and Blood – Sarah J. Maas

The ending had me dying to get my hands on House of Sky and Breath. It was my first preorder!

In this world, Bryce Quinlan works hard to provide for her partying lifestyle. One night when she goes out alone, she returns to a horrific sight: her closest and dearest friends are dead. An arrest is made, but the attacks continue to happen. Bryce is at the center of the investigation wanting to know every single detail about the attacks that killed her friends. She runs into Hunt Athalar, a Fallen Angel. He’s enslaved to an Archangel after being in the rebellion. His job is to kill whomever he’s commanded to, without question. If he can help Bryce find the murderer, he has a chance at freedom. But there is a dark power threatening their world, and they may be the only ones who can stop it.

I love this story. It’s up there with one of my favorite fantasy novels. Bryce’s spiral after finding her friends dead was highly relatable. Pushing away her other friends was only natural. I do think the romance trope in this novel is overused by Maas as if it’s the only one she knows how to write. It’s pulled off ,though, and quite well. I loved Hunt’s character and the slow revelation of his backstory. He’s an absolute heartthrob, especially when his heart and mind went to war.

The only negative thing I have to say is that, like with ACOTAR, it takes a very long time to set up. Once again the world-building is unique and very deep. There were quite a few periods where it didn’t seem like much was going on, but near the end, I found myself unable to put it down.

I give it a five out of five. As much as I disliked the pace, the world-building more than made up for it.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
