I gave this book five stars because I love Sarah J. Maas and respect the plot development and why things had to happen the way they happened.
However, emotionally I hated everything about this book. It is dark and depressing and leaves you feeling hopeless almost until the very end. Everything that can go wrong does go wrong. Multiple times I wanted to put this book down and walk away. The only pleasant storyline was Elide and Lorcan’s travels.
I could get through it and understand why all of the heart-breaking, stomach-dropping moments had to happen, but getting there felt awful. I gave it out of five stars because as much as I didn’t enjoy it, I respect the writing techniques and character development.
