What an action-packed sequel! Wow.
Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a contest to become the King of the Throne of Glass’s Champion. However, she is not loyal to the crown. In fact, we’re not sure she’s devoted to anyone except herself. Keeping up appearances becomes a deadly game when Celaena realizes she’s not the only one. Trying to figure out what evils are at work in the castle, her relationships suffer. Everyone is trying to figure out exactly where her allegiances lie. As the secrets unfold into a tragedy that Calaena might’ve been able to prevent, she wonders who exactly is on her side. She must decide what she’s working towards, and more importantly, who she can trust.
The reveals in this novel are heart-stopping. Especially that last one. Breathtaking. Celaena’s character development continues to take a dark spiral, and I love it. I both hated and loved parts of this novel, sometimes wanting to set it down and walk away. Only because things weren’t going my way though. Maas wrote this tale very well, so much so that my emotions got tangled up in it. I sometimes didn’t know where I ended and the characters began!
I can’t think of anything negative to say about this one. I was utterly blown away.
Again, this series is for you if you’re a huge fantasy lover and into a little bit of romance without too much spice. Especially if you enjoyed the build-up in the first. I give it five out of five stars.
